A yard track is a track inside the rail yard that is used for storing, repairing, and testing railcars. This makes it the best description because it captures the primary purpose of a yard—the area where cars are kept when not in service and where routine maintenance and testing can occur away from the mainline.

Think of a yard as a designated workspace with multiple tracks dedicated to handling cars: moving them into position, keeping them between runs, performing light repairs, and checking them after work or before they’re put back into service. In contrast, a track that merely connects the main line to the yard is a lead or access track, not the yard track itself.
